Annual strategy and readiness offsite

Leave with decisions.
Return with a plan.

A focused engagement for boards and executive teams to choose direction, make trade-offs, and turn priorities into an owned annual plan. Preparation before the offsite. Defined follow-through afterward.

Plan your leadership offsite

One shared direction. Distinct responsibilities.

Board

Challenge direction, examine risk and resource commitments, and establish oversight expectations.

Executives

Develop alternatives and own the operating plan, staffing, execution, and results.

Together

Test assumptions and debate strategic choices, without turning directors into an operating team.

Formal approvals remain subject to your established governance process. Workshop agreement is not automatically board approval.

Choose the format that fits the decisions.

Two working days

Executive annual planning

CEO and executive team.

Annual priorities, explicit trade-offs, owners, and a first 90-day plan.

Two to three working days

Board and executive strategy

Separate executive sessions with a focused board and executive session.

Shared strategic direction, distinct responsibilities, and an executive-owned execution plan.

One to two working days

Board strategy and oversight

Directors, with the CEO and subject-matter leaders in selected sessions.

Strategic questions, oversight expectations, risk considerations, and management follow-up requests.

An annual partnership can add separately scoped quarterly reviews. Existing diagnostics and planning work are reused where suitable, not repeated simply to fill an agenda.

The offsite is the center, not the whole engagement.

  1. 1. Prepare

Begin with the chair and CEO, selected interviews, role-appropriate assessments, and existing business evidence. Agree on the decisions before choosing the agenda.

  2. 2. Convene

Use executive preparation, a joint strategy discussion where appropriate, and executive execution planning. Build in breaks, dissent, and time for unresolved questions.

  3. 3. Commit

Document annual priorities, stopped or deferred work, resource requirements, owners, decision boundaries, and the first 90 days.

  4. 4. Follow through

Finalize the plan and budget reconciliation, then review progress and obstacles at the checkpoints agreed in the scope.

A clear scope before a fee.

The proposal specifies preparation, participants, facilitation days, deliverables, revision limits, and follow-through. Location affects travel and vendor expenses, not an automatic multiplier on professional value. Venue, travel, tax treatment, and client-paid expenses are stated separately.

This is not a guarantee of business performance, a substitute for legal or financial advice, or unlimited advisory access. Assessments provide self-reported signals to investigate, not a verdict on individual leaders. Confidentiality, document access, and interview handling are agreed before collection.

Full Board Operations

Keep board oversight distinct from management execution.

Our application: Use separate working sessions and a deliberate joint strategy discussion.

General governance guidance, not an endorsement of this engagement.

McKinsey

Building a forward-looking board

Involve directors in strategic options rather than only presenting a finished plan.

Our application: Prepare alternatives and unresolved choices before the joint session.

Practice guidance; it does not establish a universal retreat duration.

Keep calm and allocate capital: Six process improvements

Connect strategy to resource allocation and allow adjustment during the year.

Our application: Reconcile priorities with the budget and schedule follow-through reviews.

Adapt the approach to the organization; the specific agenda below is our design.

Start with the decisions you need to make.

Bring your planning deadline, the leadership groups involved, and the choices that cannot wait another year. We will determine the appropriate scope together.
