The decision moved to where the evidence was, and the room hated it
Relocating decision rights against the loud objection of the people who held them.
Knowledge accumulates at the front. Authority accumulates at the top. The gap between them is where organizational performance goes to slow down.
The scouts were not wrong about baseball. They were wrong about who should decide, and those two are very hard to separate when you are the one being corrected.
What happens
A baseball team with a third of its competitors budget cannot win by outbidding them, so it changes who decides which players to acquire.
Authority moves from a room of experienced scouts using judgment to an analytical method that a young economist can run.
The reading
The interesting part is not the statistics. It is that the change is a transfer of decision rights, and it is resisted exactly as decision-right transfers are always resisted: as a challenge to the competence and standing of the people who held them.
The scouts are not wrong about baseball. They are wrong about who should decide, and they experience the correction as an insult because the two are hard to separate when you are the one being corrected.
What makes it hold is that the authority moves completely rather than partially. A half-move, where the method advises and the room still decides, produces the worst of both and is the more common outcome.
All four, side by side
| Condition | How it worked before | How it worked after |
|---|---|---|
| Attention | Scouts watch a swing, a body and a girlfriend; nobody is watching the one number that predicts runs | Attention moves to on-base percentage and stays there through a losing streak |
| Alignment | The manager agrees in the meeting and plays a different lineup, which is agreement without alignment in one move | Beane trades the alternatives away, so the lineup he wants is the only lineup left to play |
| Authority | The method advises and the room still decides, which is the half-move and the more common outcome | The method decides, and the objection is heard as what it is, an argument about standing |
| Adaptability | A losing streak is read as proof the idea was wrong | The idea survives the streak, because the reason for it was stated before any results came in |
What would have changed it
Give the same organization the same analysis with the old decision rights intact and nothing happens. The insight exists, it is briefed, and every acquisition still routes through the people whose judgment it contradicts.
That is the ordinary fate of a good analysis in an organization that did not move the authority with it.
Where you have seen this
You bought the analytics platform. Every decision it informs still needs sign-off from the person whose experience it is contradicting.
What to do about it
A reading that ends in understanding is entertainment. This is filed under Training, so it ends in things a team can actually do.
If you bought the analytics and kept the sign-off, you moved the org chart and nothing else. Say plainly who decides now.
Expect the objection to arrive dressed as expertise. Separate who is right from who decides, and answer the second one out loud.
Refuse the half-move. A method that advises while the old room still decides is the worst of both, and it is the more common outcome.
What the reading rests on
Decision rights sitting where the knowledge is
The knowledge many decisions need is dispersed and specific to time and place, so it cannot be moved up a hierarchy without losing the part that mattered. Formal authority, the right to decide, and real authority, effective control over the decision, can therefore sit in different places; moving one without the other changes the org chart and nothing else.

What this is not
These are readings, not evidence. A film is written to be satisfying rather than to be true, so no screening is a finding about any real organization and none is offered as one. What a screening does is name a mechanism that organizational research has actually studied, cite that research so you can go and check it, and then show the mechanism operating in footage you have already seen. The citation stands behind the mechanism; it never stands behind the film, and pairing the two is our reading rather than a result. Argue with the reading. That is the point of using material you already hold.
You have seen it here
Now read your own organization
A screening is practice. Nothing here measures your organization and nothing here commits it. The diagnostics do the measuring, on your conditions rather than somebody else's.
