Builders Build
I grew up on job sites. Literally, the kind where the mud gets into your boots before you reach the front door. My father was a builder, and watching how he worked turned out to be an education in leadership I did not understand until decades later.
Before he ever touched a piece of lumber, he read the site. He walked every square foot of ground, looking for what would not appear on any plan. Then he coordinated people, inspected constantly, and taught anyone willing to learn. He did not create the building by force of will. He created the conditions in which the building could go up.
That is the whole idea, carried into organizations: you do not create performance. You create the conditions where performance becomes possible. The question is never whether your people are working hard enough. It is what you have built around them.
Builders build. They do not extract results from people through pressure; they release results by changing the conditions people are asked to build in. Everything else in this work, the seeing, the diagnosis, the Four A’s, follows from that one shift in where a leader looks.
