Study the Land
Before a builder touches a single tool, they walk the ground. They read what will not appear on any plan: the slope, the drainage, the soil, the way the light falls. Every engagement inside an organization begins the same way, or it should.
The instinct of most people brought in to fix an organization is to move fast: survey the situation, form a hypothesis, and start prescribing within the first week. It feels like competence. It is usually the opposite. The visible symptom is rarely the real constraint, and prescribing before you have read the ground means confidently fixing the wrong thing.
Studying the land is the discipline of resisting that instinct. It means watching how work actually moves before deciding how it should move. It means asking what the organization is trying to accomplish, and then staying quiet long enough to see the answer in behavior rather than in slides.
Diagnosis before prescription is not patience for its own sake. It is the difference between an intervention that fits the whole and one that treats whatever happened to be loudest. Read the land, and the right work becomes obvious. Skip it, and even good effort lands in the wrong place.
